What is the connection between Virgin mobile and boost mobile? And what is boost mobile at all? These are our first question to answer in this review. Have you heard about this service before? Well, if you come from Australia or New-Zeeland, actually you should. Boost mobile is originated in Australia and becomes more and more popular in New-Zeeland, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and some others. They offer wireless prepay service owned by Sprint Nextel. For example in the USA they use network of Virgin mobile, so now we have found a connection between these companies. Let’s have a closer look at their web site to understand why do they cooperate with Virgin mobile and how interesting are their services.
Site provides:
- stylish WEB 2.0 design
Boost mobile is orientated on the young audience. Design and stylish look for them sometimes is more important than the usability or even the prices. So it is here a lot of sliders, fascinating flash animation and animated buttons are everywhere. The usability loose a little bit but the user is so fascinated looking at his favorite phone model jumping and zooming in and out, that he forgets actually what was he looking for. - Shop
Here are provided quite a number of sections but will pay attention only to the most important for us. - Plans
Today boost mobile is concentrated on 3 main plans and they are interesting because of flatrate. So the first one is called “monthly unlimited” you pay $50/month for unlimited nationwide talk, text, web, 411, IM & email with no contracts. Is not bad but they have original marketing strategy and offer you to shrink the month payments. After 18 on time payments your monthly costs can be shrinked to 35 dollars per month. This is impressive.
The second plan is called BlackBerry monthly unlimited in general it has almost the same conditions but you get extra access to BlackBerry Web, BlackBerry App World, IM, and to your E-mails.
The last plan (to our mind is not so impressive) has a name Daily Unlimited: $2/day. Includes nationwide unlimited talk, text/media messaging, web access, instant messaging, email, 411 directory assistance and Walkie-Talkie. - Phones
This is not more a surprise that wireless and mobile providers offer you to buy a mobile phone. Boost mobile is not an exception. In their shop you can find +- 15phone models, they are quite interesting but not too much (Motorola Rambler, Samsung Galaxy Prevail, Blackberry Curve 8530…). Generally phone models are presented from low price segment; probably this is one more positive aspect for young people. - Coverage
It looks identical to the coverage map of Virgin mobile, the reasons for that we have already written. - Support section
The FAQ gets the highest mark from us, it has logical structure fantastic look and very good usability. In comparing to Virgin mobile much more questions and answers and their better structured. - Community
Boost mobile first of all tries to impress young clients with the names of famous clients (here we got names of Carmelo Anthony, some football teams in Mexico). This seems to be a continuation of Virgin mobile marketing strategy. Original are the Sponsorships. Actually boost mobile has sponsored quite a number of different events like NASCAR Nationwide Series, Boost Mobile Freestyle Motocross Worldwide Tour/Team, UFC and some of these sponsorship are presented on the main page
Site drawbacks:
- Number of phone models in the shop
It could much bigger and the phones might be presented not only from low price segment but from other as well. Some young people may have rich parents. - Usability
Flash animation look nice but still sometimes it is working slow and at this website it seems to be a small minus. - Languages
Again just standard English and Spanish and no more options.
Site summary and verdict:
We enjoyed the animation of the site; we liked its clear black design. The strongest point of boostmobile is definitely the price. We tested some of them an came to conclusion that the most suitable for general user can be $50 unlimited plan. You get unlimited wireless service (everything you can imagine: internet, sms, walkie-talkie, voicemail). These all services are provided for such a low price and you have no contracts. We compared this plan with others and result was clear other positive aspect is that you know exactly how much will you pay for mobile phone. So you can easily plan you budget. This plan is comfortable also for company workers. You will know definitely how much you are going to pay in the end of the month.
Support and service are highly appreciated. But still the site has small drawbacks and this does not allow to get 10 out of 10.
Site verdict: image and style is the strongest point of boost mobile.
